The Research Based Benefits of Acupuncture for Back Pain
If you've ever experienced back pain, you know how much it can affect every part of your life. Simple tasks like getting dressed, getting into the car, sitting at your desk, or even getting out of bed can become difficult.
When you seek treatment, the recommendations are often similar: rest, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), ice or heat, and, in some cases, steroid injections or surgery. While these treatments can be helpful for many people, they're not the only options.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), "chronic low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and affects over one-third of older adults in the United States." This is a staggering number that reflects just how common and life-altering back pain can be.
Acupuncture points lay all along the back, with roughly 100 different points spanning from the neck to the sacrum.
I know firsthand how debilitating back pain can be. Pain doesn't just affect your body; it can impact your mood, your sleep, your social life, and your ability to enjoy everyday life.
Acupuncture is an evidence-based treatment that can help many people with both acute and chronic back pain. By helping relax tight muscles, improving circulation, calming the nervous system, and supporting the body's natural healing processes, acupuncture can reduce pain and improve function without relying on medication.
Recent research continues to support its effectiveness. In an NIH-funded randomized clinical trial involving 800 adults aged 65 and older with chronic low back pain, participants who received acupuncture in addition to their usual medical care experienced less pain, improved physical function after six months, and less pain-related disability after one year compared with those who received usual care alone.
As study investigator Andrea Cook, Ph.D., noted:
"Acupuncture offers a less invasive option that has a better safety profile than a lot of the common treatments for back pain in older adults.”
Whether your back pain started last week or has been with you for years, acupuncture may be an effective addition to your treatment plan, helping you move more comfortably, reduce pain, and get back to doing the things you love.
